Public asked to weigh in on proposed city transit fare changes

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Honolulu Rate Commission is asking the public to weigh in on a proposed city transit fare hike for Skyline, TheBus and TheHandi-Van.
The proposal includes a $10 increase for adult monthly passes, and a $5 increase for children.
There would also be a $110 hike for adult annual passes.
But the plan does provide a $10 decrease for seniors, riders with disabilities and low-income residents.
The city Department of Transportation Services’ said the proposed fares will help to ensure the city‘s multimodal system remains “reliable, sustainable, and able to meet the changing needs of Oahu’s transit riders into the future.” It’ll help them keep up with rising costs.
Transit fares have not been raised since 2022.
“It’s always hard to find the balance between what taxpayers contribute to the upkeep of the system, and the riders that use the system,” says DTS Director Roger Morton. “The fare policy changes under consideration will simplify the current fare structure, making the system more user-friendly for residents and visitors.”
The public is urged to provide their input at a public forum on Tuesday, Nov. 12 starting at 2:30 p.m. It’ll be held in the Manoa Falls Conference Room ( 711 Kapi‘olani Boulevard, Suite 1600).
